Between the terrorist attacks and the Chibok girls’ kidnapping, the mainstream media portrayal of Borno has been understandably, less than pleasant. However, in the aftermath of these atrocities, there is still a vibrant community of men, women and children that are rarely shown in the media. In an attempt to change the narrative, photo journalist; Fati Abubakar in collaboration with the Borno state government held an exhibition at Omenka Gallery titled; ‘Bits of Borno’ – a photo series depicting the people of Borno in their every day lives. With powerful portraits of women and children, the exhibition evokes a sense of hope for the future. There is a quite strength that runs through all of her images and you see why the theme of the exhibition is ‘Bruised not broken’.
